US Consumers Tighten Budgets Amid Elevated Gas Prices
US consumers have become more cautious in their spending habits, according to recent earnings reports from major retailers. Walmart and Home Depot reported slower sales growth, while luxury brands like Ralph Lauren continued to thrive among wealthier shoppers.
The trend is expected to continue into the holiday shopping season, with retailers relying on a mix of discounts, new merchandise, and higher-end brands to keep customers coming. Consumers are making trade-offs due to elevated gasoline prices, opting for affordable treats and occasional splurges over big purchases.
Walmart's CFO, John David Rainey, noted that price cuts alone may no longer be enough to compel a reticent shopper. At McDonald's, discounted meal options failed to draw customers, while fresh menu items at Yum Brands stores like Taco Bell and KFC were more successful.
