US Envoys Arrive in Moscow for War Talks Amid Downbeat Prognosis
US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday, September 5, to hold diplomatic negotiations regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to Russian media, a modified US Air Force Boeing C-32A departed from Miami, Florida, made an intermediate stop in Helsinki, Finland, before continuing into Russian airspace.
The arrival in Moscow precedes a scheduled diplomatic visit to Kyiv, where Witkoff and Kushner are expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The last round of trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US took place on February 17-18, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland.
A security expert has downplayed the chances of a diplomatic breakthrough from this mission, stating that it is unlikely to yield significant results. A subsequent round of negotiations had been scheduled for March 5 in Abu Dhabi but was ultimately postponed due to conflict in the Middle East.
