US Golf Association Tries New Math to Snap Ryder Cup Losing Streak
The United States Golf Association has introduced a new qualification system for the Ryder Cup team, aiming to end a 34-year drought of not winning on European soil. The old system, which counted results from the previous year and awarded points based on PGA Tour prize money, is being replaced with a simpler and more transparent approach.
The new system will count exactly 31 tournaments played in 2027, starting from The American Express in January and ending at the BMW Championship in August. The top six Americans will automatically make the team, while captain Jim Furyk will have six wildcard picks after the Tour Championship.
The most significant change is the abandonment of prize money as a measuring stick for Ryder Cup performance. Instead, fixed point totals will be assigned based on tournament type and finishing position. Major winners will receive 3,000 points, while Signature Event and playoff winners will get 2,250 points.
