US Military Ditches GPS with Quantum Nav Breakthrough

A breakthrough navigation test was conducted by the US military using quantum sensors to read Earth's magnetic field and stay on course. The Embraer 170 aircraft flew for 4 hours and 23 minutes over the open Pacific without GPS, from Washington state's Puget Sound to southern Alaska and back.

The MagNav system, built by Honeywell Aerospace, improved position accuracy by 89% compared with traditional backup navigation methods. Navigation data streamed in real-time to pilots on ordinary tablets, allowing the system to be fielded without a full cockpit redesign.

Officials say the technology is intended as an additional layer, not a replacement for satellites. However, it would result in a highly advanced stealth aircraft, enabling military transports and patrol aircraft flying long Pacific routes to navigate in contested airspace without detection.
