US Military Tests Quantum-Sensing Navigation System with Earth's Magnetic Field
The US military has tested a quantum-sensing navigation system called MagNav that uses Earth's magnetic field to guide aircraft without GPS. The technology, developed by Honeywell Aerospace, was installed on an Embraer 170 aircraft and flew for 4 hours and 23 minutes over the Pacific Ocean without relying on satellite signals or visible landmarks.
The test demonstrated a significant improvement in position accuracy, with MagNav achieving a 89% better performance compared to traditional backup navigation methods. The system works by continuously comparing measurements of Earth's magnetic field with known magnetic signatures, providing a stable and unjammable navigation map.
MagNav is designed to address the growing concerns over GPS disruption, jamming, and spoofing, which can have severe consequences for military and commercial aviation operations. The technology has the potential to become an additional layer of resilience for both military and commercial aircraft operating in GPS-denied environments.
