US Navy F/A-XX Fighter Program Nears Crucial Decision
The US Navy is nearing a crucial decision for its 6th-generation F/A-XX aircraft carrier fighter program, with a winner expected to be chosen within days. The program has been ongoing for months, with Northrop Grumman (NG) and Boeing/St. Louis as the two final contenders. According to Adm. Daryl Caudle, Chief of Naval Operations, the selection will be made by the end of August 2026.
Both companies have released CGI depictions of their proposed designs, but significant details remain classified. The F/A-XX is intended as a replacement for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which has been in service for over 40 years. The program's complexity and stealth requirements may give Northrop Grumman an edge, given its extensive experience with low-observable aircraft.
Lockheed Martin (LM) is also being considered as a potential subcontractor to the winning bidder, due to its expertise in stealth-aircraft design and flight control systems. Boeing's lack of experience in developing stealth aircraft may make it less competitive in this regard.
