US Oil Reserve Heads to California Amid Global Trade Shifts
A recent shift in global oil trade has led to an unusual movement of US Strategic Petroleum Reserve oil to California, according to ship tracking service Kpler. The cargo, consisting of Bayou Choctaw Sweet crude, was transported from Louisiana to Chevron's Richmond refinery and El Segundo refinery via the Panama Canal.
About 460,000 barrels of the crude were delivered to Chevron's Richmond refinery, while another 50,000 barrels were discharged at the company's El Segundo refinery. The oil was loaded onto tanker Red Moon in Louisiana and transported through the Atlantic Terminal on the east coast of Panama before being transferred to two smaller ships for delivery.
This development highlights California's increasing reliance on imported crude oil due to reduced supplies from the Middle East following the Iran war. The state, which was once a major oil producer, now imports around 230,000 barrels per day from the region. Availability of alternative crude oil is limited due to competing demand from Asia.
