US Revamps Ryder Cup Qualifying Criteria for 2027
The United States Ryder Cup team is revamping its qualifying criteria for the third time in a row. The new system, announced on Wednesday, will award points only during the year leading up to the 2027 matches in Ireland.
Under the new rules, players can earn points starting from The American Express in California and ending with the BMW Championship at Liberty National in New Jersey. The top six players with the most points will automatically qualify for the team, while Jim Furyk will make six captain's picks after the season-ending Tour Championship.
The key difference in this system is that it no longer bases points on PGA Tour official money. Instead, a points distribution list awards 3,000 points to major winners, 2,850 points to The Players Championship winner, and 1,500 points for regular PGA Tour events. Signature events still offer an advantage, with 10th place at a signature event worth 342 points compared to 228 points for 10th place at a regular event.
Furyk stated that the new system will help identify the strongest players in September 2027, citing the need for a fair assessment of how to identify top talent amidst the changing landscape of golf and prize money. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 17-19, 2027, at Adare Manor in Ireland.
