US Ryder Cup Team Introduces New Qualifying System Based on Points
The United States Ryder Cup team is introducing a new qualifying system for the 2027 matches in Ireland. The change, announced by Jim Furyk, will use points earned during the year leading up to the tournament. Players can earn points at events from The American Express to the BMW Championship, with the top six players in points automatically qualifying for the team.
The new system eliminates the previous reliance on PGA Tour official money and instead awards points based on finishes at major tournaments, signature events, and regular PGA Tour events. For example, the winner of a major will receive 3,000 points, while the winner of a regular event will get 1,500 points.
Furyk believes this new system will provide a more accurate assessment of a player's abilities, as it takes into account their performance at various types of events. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 17-19, 2027, at Adare Manor in Ireland, and Europe's captain Luke Donald will be looking to make history by becoming the first captain to win three consecutive matches.
