US Scraps 60-Day Job Search Window: Consequences for Indian Professionals on H-1B Visas

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is reviewing a proposal that could significantly impact Indian professionals on H-1B visas. The proposed rule would eliminate the 60-day grace period currently available to certain non-immigrant workers after their employment ends.

This window allows eligible foreign workers, including H-1B visa holders, to remain in the US while searching for a new job or exploring another lawful immigration status. However, if implemented, the change could turn this process into an immediate immigration deadline.

Indian professionals make up a significant share of the US H-1B workforce, and layoffs could become far more disruptive without the 60-day buffer. The proposal is currently under review by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and has not yet become law.
