US Slaps Sanctions on 27 Iranian Airlines Amid Boeing 777 Controversy
The US Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines, including Iran Aseman Airlines and Mahan Air, as part of a new aviation-sector determination. The sanctions were announced on September 8, 2026, and are aimed at restricting Iran's access to Western-built aircraft.
The Treasury also revealed how Mahan Air acquired three Boeing 777s through third countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The aircraft were diverted from a retired fleet and temporarily registered in Sharjah-based ECT Aviation Support.
OFAC sanctioned both ECT Aviation Support and its Egyptian owner, Ibrahim Ali Mohamed Mohamed Mahran, as well as UAE-based Aerobravo Airplane Management and Operation LLC. Four cargo handlers and general sales agents were also designated for servicing Mahan Air's international flights.
