US Stock Market Indexes Fall as Interest Rates Soar
The US stock market indexes fell on Tuesday, despite some positive news in the chip sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.7%, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 fell by 0.8% and 0.4%, respectively.
The major concern for investors is rising interest rates. The 10-year Treasury yield hit a 19-year high of 5.041%, while the 30-year yield reached 5.401%. This has led to higher mortgage rates, with 30-year mortgages crossing 7% last week.
Oil prices also rose, with Brent crude increasing by 2.6% to $108.41 and US crude adding 3.3% to $104.76. The United States Oil Fund (USO) gained 4.1% today.
The chip sector, which was a major concern on Monday due to AI-related worries, saw some gains on Tuesday. Nvidia edged higher, Qualcomm rose by 4%, and Advanced Micro Devices gained 2.3%. However, the overall market decline outweighed these positive developments.
