US Stock Market Rebounds as Treasury Yields Fall Sharply
The US stock market saw a modest recovery on Wednesday after Treasury yields fell sharply following an announcement from the US Treasury Department. The department stated it could increase its purchases of government bonds, which helped ease some of the pressure weighing on global financial markets. This move was seen as a supportive measure for the broader market.
The S&P 500 rose 0.3% after reaching a record high last week and is now poised to end its four-session losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 65 points, or 0.1%, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.2%. Treasury yields played a significant role in shaping market sentiment, with the 30-year yield declining sharply to 5.20% from 5.28% on Tuesday.
The drop in Treasury yields was attributed to the US Treasury Department's plans to increase its purchases of longer-dated Treasury securities. This move is aimed at providing greater liquidity support in long-term nominal sectors where market participants have shown strong sponsorship. Despite this decline, yields remain above pre-war levels, with the 10-year Treasury yield sitting at 4.65%.
Several major companies reported positive earnings results, which contributed to the market's upward momentum. Estee Lauder saw a significant gain of 15.7% after its CEO announced that revenue growth had accelerated for the fourth consecutive quarter. Other companies like Moderna and Merck also experienced notable gains following strong study results involving their jointly developed cancer vaccine.
