US Stocks Rally Amid Nvidia Earnings Bump, Interest Rate Concerns
The US stock market experienced a mixed trading day on Friday, August 28, with all three major Wall Street benchmarks in positive territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 232.72 points or 0.43%, while the S&P 500 gained 34.95 or 0.45%. However, the Nasdaq Composite was down by 103.06 or 0.39%.
The market's performance can be attributed to Nvidia's strong earnings outlook, which helped revive confidence in AI-related spending and fueled Thursday's technology rally. The chipmaker's shares had jumped 8.7% after its revenue outlook exceeded expectations.
However, the gains were tempered by concerns about inflation and borrowing costs, as well as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish tone at Jackson Hole. Warsh indicated that additional tightening could be necessary if price pressures fail to ease, leading to higher rate hike expectations.
The market is caught between optimism over corporate earnings and AI investment on one side, and renewed concerns about US interest rates and inflation on the other. The combination of a firmer dollar and higher Treasury yields suggests that investors are not treating the rally as a straightforward risk-on move.
