US Stocks Soar as Earnings Boom and Oil Prices Plummet
The US stock market experienced a significant rally on Tuesday, with major indices hitting record highs. The S&P 500 surged by 1.8%, surpassing its previous all-time high from a couple of months ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 907 points, or 1.7%, setting a new record just a day after achieving another milestone.
Caterpillar, the heavy-equipment manufacturer, reported quarterly profits and revenues that not only surpassed expectations but marked the first instance of generating over $20 billion in sales within a single quarter. CEO Joe Creed highlighted robust order rates and a growing backlog across the company's primary business sectors, benefiting from increased demand for turbines used in data centers amid the ongoing AI boom.
Palantir Technologies also played a key role in the market's upward movement, with its shares skyrocketing by 29.5%. The surge came after CEO Alex Karp announced that the company’s overall revenue had soared by 93% in what he characterized as an “otherworldly” quarter.
The drop in oil prices contributed to the bullish sentiment in the market, with Brent crude declining 5.3% to $79.36 per barrel. This drop alleviated some of the uncertainty that had characterized the oil market.
