US Stocks Surge as Oil Prices Plunge Amid Easing Geopolitical Tensions
The US stock market indices rose on Monday due to easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a drop in crude oil prices. This boost in investor sentiment comes after US President Donald Trump's announcement that 'parameters' of a potential agreement with Iran were taking shape.
Trump had threatened severe military action against Tehran last week, but refrained from launching fresh attacks over the weekend. Iranian officials denied any negotiations with the United States were currently underway, however.
The prospect of reduced geopolitical risks weighed heavily on oil prices, with Brent crude falling 4.9% to $83.65 a barrel. This decline reflects expectations that supply disruptions in the region may become less likely if diplomatic efforts progress.
US Treasury yields also retreated as demand for safe-haven assets eased, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield slipping to 4.68%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 274 points, or 0.52%, to 52,759.06, while the S&P 500 added 15.1 points, or 0.20%, to 7,504.78.
