US Stocks Surge to New Records on AI Earnings and Mideast Hopes
The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record highs on August 4. The gains were driven by AI-related companies such as Caterpillar and Palantir, which reported better-than-expected earnings.
Caterpillar's stock price surged 5.6% after the company raised its annual revenue growth forecast. This made it the biggest boost to the Dow Industrials, contributing about 280 points to the average.
Palantir Technologies also performed well, with a 29.5% increase in its stock price and a record-breaking daily percentage gain since February 2024. The company's revised revenue forecast was seen as a positive sign for the AI industry.
The drop in crude oil prices, which fell by about 5%, also contributed to the rally. This decrease reduced expectations of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve and led to a decline in US Treasury yields.
