US Toilet Paper Prices Soar Amid Trade War with Canada
A trade war between the US and Canada has led to surging toilet paper prices in the US. The Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, vowed to match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' after trade negotiations broke down last weekend.
Canada is imposing a 25% to 50% tariff on American goods starting September 8, including paper products like toilet paper and tissues. This affects Procter & Gamble's Charmin brand, which relies heavily on Canadian raw materials.
The US imported $328m worth of toilet paper from Canada in 2024, making it the largest exporter to the US. The average American uses 141 rolls of toilet paper per year, more than any other country.
Other products affected by the trade war include Canadian liquor, including Crown Royal and Canadian Club whiskey, which are under a 50% tariff. While Canada has not introduced a tariff on American liquor, most provinces have banned it in retaliation for earlier tariffs on Canadian products.
