US Visa Processing Shifted to Lagos, Abuja Embassy Remains Open

The US Embassy in Abuja will remain operational despite a shift in routine visa processing to Lagos. According to the US Department of State, routine visa services will be transferred to regional hubs by August 1, 2026. The realignment is aimed at strengthening national security, improving efficiency, and ensuring uniform screening standards.

The change affects routine visa processing for both nonimmigrant and immigrant visas, including tourist and business visas. However, existing valid visas are not affected, and the department stressed that applicants who already have appointments should check their emails for instructions.

Nigerians and residents seeking US visas will now process applications at designated locations in Lagos or other regional hubs. The department has provided guidance for applicants who had already paid Machine Readable Visa fees at affected locations, including deadlines for scheduling appointments.
