Venezuela Secures 'Tens of Billions' in Deals with US Oil Giants
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright oversaw the signing of multi-billion dollar deals between Venezuela and oil majors Chevron, ENI, and GE Vernova on Wednesday. The agreements are valued at 'tens of billions of dollars' and aim to boost energy production in the country. Speaking alongside Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez, Wright emphasized that increasing energy output is crucial for transforming Venezuela's economy and improving living standards.
The deals include Chevron's development of two additional oil fields in the Orinoco Belt, valued at $7 billion, which is expected to more than double production within five years. ENI has gained exclusive rights to explore the giant Junin 5 oil field. GE Vernova will help revitalize Venezuela's struggling electricity sector.
Rodriguez expressed hope that the deal signed on August 28 would translate into benefits for the US people, although Wright had initially been expected to finalize a separate oil deal granting the US control of about one-fifth of Venezuela's reserves. The actual agreement appears to have already been concluded before Wright's visit.
