Vietnam Airlines 787 Overruns Munich Runway in Tail Strike
A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 suffered a tail strike and overrun during takeoff from Munich Airport on August 15, 2026. The plane was operating as flight VN34 to Hanoi when it accelerated down Runway 26R for an unusually long ground roll before finally lifting off.
The incident was caught on video by airport observers, who described the maneuver as a 'last-ditch' rotation to avoid a more serious runway excursion. The aircraft left marks in the overrun and grass beyond the threshold, with a pronounced tail scrape visible at the moment of rotation.
According to tracking data, the plane remained in the vicinity of Munich Airport for two hours after taking off, dumping fuel to reduce landing weight. It then conducted an emergency return, touching down on the northern runway with multiple destroyed main-gear tires and scattered rubber debris.
