Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Makes Emergency Landing After Dramatic Takeoff

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 made an emergency landing at Munich Airport on August 15 after experiencing a dramatic takeoff, which involved a suspected tailstrike and runway overrun.

According to flight-tracking data and eyewitness accounts, the aircraft used almost the full length of the airport's 4,000-meter runway before becoming airborne, with amateur video and still images suggesting contact between the rear fuselage and the runway surface during rotation.

The crew discontinued the climb and began circling near Munich for over an hour, burning fuel to reduce weight before returning to land. The aircraft dumped fuel in the surrounding area and landed on the airport's northern runway, where it was met by fire and rescue vehicles.
