Visa Dominates Crypto Card Payments Market
Visa continues to dominate the market for crypto card payments, processing nearly all tracked volume. According to data from Paymentscan.xyz, shared by a16z Crypto on X, Visa's share of monthly payment volume is around 99%. Mastercard, its main competitor, briefly reached 5% in early 2024, but has since fallen back to about 1%.
This significant lead is due to Visa's extensive partnerships with crypto exchanges and fintech companies, allowing for seamless issuance and acceptance. Its global merchant network also gives it an advantage over Mastercard. The data only tracks transactions where crypto assets are converted to fiat currency at the point of sale using stablecoins or other digital assets.
The market for crypto card payments is still small compared to traditional card payments, which process trillions of dollars monthly. However, the growth of stablecoin usage is driving an increase in these types of transactions. This trend indicates that crypto is integrating with legacy financial infrastructure rather than replacing it.
