Visa Edges Out Mastercard at Record Highs on Forward Multiple
Visa and Mastercard both reached record highs on August 24, with Visa trading at $382.41 and Mastercard at $599.86.
The two companies are often compared due to their similarities, but they have distinct differences that become apparent when examined closely.
One key area of differentiation is cross-border volume, which yields the highest per-swipe in this industry.
Visa reported a 12% year-over-year increase in cross-border volume excluding intra-Europe, with cross-border e-commerce up 16%, while Mastercard posted 12% global cross-border growth and 20% card-not-present excluding travel growth.
However, Mastercard outperformed Visa on monetization, with its cross-border assessments growing 20% compared to 12% volume growth, attributed to international pricing and mix.
Visa's lower yield applies to a larger base due to its massive $4 trillion quarterly payments volume, but Mastercard is squeezing more revenue out of each cross-border dollar.
Both companies are investing in agentic commerce and stablecoins, with parallel tracks on cross-border growth and yield capture.
Valuation at the highs shows Visa trading at 25x forward earnings compared to Mastercard's 30x, with trailing multiples effectively tied at 32x for both.
Mastercard's premium multiple is defensible due to its superior growth and margins, but a retirement investor paying today's prices would prioritize the forward multiple.
Visa wins this dimension as the cheaper stock.
