Visa Takes Center Stage as Global Payments Duopolist
Visa (NYSE:V) is one of two dominant players in the global payments market, often compared to Mastercard (NYSE:MA). While both companies have similar business models and a strong presence in various payment services, Visa has a broader influence due to its deeper involvement in debit transactions, wider global acceptance, and higher margins.
The company's history dates back to 1958 as BankAmericard, a credit card launched by Bank of America. It rebranded as Visa in 1976 and went public in 2008 in the largest IPO in US history at that time. Since then, Visa has expanded aggressively into tokenisation, cyber services, open banking, and real-time payments.
One significant acquisition was Tink, a European open-banking platform acquired by Visa in 2022, which enables account-to-account payments, data aggregation, and merchant payment initiation. Although Visa's attempt to acquire Plaid was blocked by US regulators, the company has since developed similar capabilities internally.
Visa's B2B Connect is a blockchain-inspired cross-border B2B payment network that serves as the largest tokenisation provider globally, with over seven billion tokens. This scale gives it a structural advantage in securing and routing digital commerce flows.
