Wall Street Hangs Near Records Amid Earnings Reports
Stocks on Wall Street experienced a mixed day of trading on Wednesday, hovering near record highs set just the day before. The S&P 500 rose 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 473 points, or 0.9%, as of 2:12 p.m. Eastern time. In contrast, the Nasdaq composite fell 0.4%.
The major indexes have been consistently rising throughout the week, giving August a strong start. The S&P 500 and Dow both set records on Tuesday, while the Nasdaq remains 2% below its record. Market strategist Mark Hackett from Nationwide noted that 'the coiled spring investors have been waiting for has finally released, with the S&P 500 Index surging to record highs for the first time in two months.'
Several notable companies reported earnings results, contributing to the market's upward momentum. The Walt Disney Co. saw a significant increase of 3.7% after easily beating profit forecasts, thanks in part to a $1 billion box office haul from 'Toy Story 5' and theme park revenue. In contrast, Elon Musk's SpaceX fell 11.9% following its first quarterly report as a public company, which revealed sharp spending on artificial intelligence.
