Wall Street Hits New Highs as Corporate Profits Soar
The US stock market remained steady at record highs in August, as investors celebrated strong corporate profits and growth expectations. The S&P 500 rose 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 473 points, or 0.9%. Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide, noted that 'the coiled spring investors have been waiting for has finally released.'
The strong earnings reports from companies like Walt Disney and Booking Holdings helped drive the market's gains, with Disney rising 3.7% after easily beating profit forecasts. In contrast, Elon Musk's SpaceX fell 11.9% following its first quarterly report as a public company.
Oil prices held steady, with Brent crude at $79.26 a barrel. The Strait of Hormuz situation remains uncertain, but President Donald Trump hinted that a deal to reopen the strait could come soon.
