Wall Street Rebounds as Bond Volatility Ebbs
The major US stock indexes rebounded on Friday, closing higher after a turbulent week driven by bond market volatility. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1% to 53,277, while the S&P 500 rose 0.4% to 7,674 and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.4%, closing at 26,180.
Despite Friday's gains, all three major indexes finished the week lower due to a sell-off in government bonds and sharp swings in yields that kept pressure on riskier assets. Investors remained focused on the outlook for interest rates and whether persistent bond-market volatility could spill over into equities.
Bitcoin provided some relief with a 22% weekly gain, its strongest since November 2024. Nvidia Corp will be in focus next Wednesday when it reports earnings after the closing bell, while Federal Reserve policymakers will gather at the annual Jackson Hole summit for clues on interest rates.
