Wall Street's Favorite Stocks Face Scrutiny Over Shaky Forecasts
The Wall Street consensus is that three major stocks - NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Nike (NKE), and Zoetis (ZTS) - are poised for significant gains, with price targets implying returns above 20%. However, analysts' optimism may be misplaced, as they often provide favorable forecasts to win business in other areas, such as mergers and acquisitions.
The stock that gives investors pause is NXP Semiconductors. Despite its high valuation ratio of 13.5x forward P/E, the company's sales have been flat over the last two years, indicating a failure to expand this cycle. Analysts project a 15.4% sales growth for next year, but this may be overly optimistic given the shaky demand environment.
Nike is another stock that raises concerns. The global athletic footwear and apparel giant has underwhelmed with constant currency revenue performance over the past two years, suggesting its product offerings at current prices do not resonate with customers. Nike's low free cash flow margin of 5.9% for the last two years gives it little breathing room to fund growth or return capital to shareholders.
Zoetis, the world's largest pure-play animal health company, is also seen as a risk. With annual revenue growth of only 2.7% over the last two years, slower than its healthcare peers, and a projected sales decline of 1.7% for the next 12 months, Zoetis may struggle in a tough demand environment.
