Walmart Cracks Open Tap-to-Pay Options for Customers
Walmart has announced plans to expand its payment options for customers starting in August. The retail giant will begin accepting Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other digital payment methods at select stores on August 24. This move follows a decision by Walmart to hold off on accepting these popular payment technologies to encourage the use of its own Walmart Pay system.
The new tap-to-pay option will allow customers to make purchases with their preferred digital wallet without needing to use cash or cards. The service is expected to roll out at all Walmart and Sam's Club locations by the end of 2026, with gas stations set to follow in mid-2027.
Walmart stated that the decision to expand payment options comes from a desire to give customers more choice and make everyday shopping easier. With over 85% of US retailers already accepting Apple Pay, this move is likely to please many customers who have previously complained about being unable to use their preferred payment method at Walmart stores.
