Walmart Cracks Open to Mobile Payments
Walmart has finally relented and will begin accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay across its stores, including Sam's Club locations. This move marks a significant shift for the retail giant, which had long resisted adopting these payment options.
The rollout starts on August 24, with Tap to Pay being added at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations. Walmart expects this option to reach all stores and clubs by the end of the year and will expand it to fuel stations by mid-2027.
This change is more than just a minor update - it represents a recognition that mobile payments have become an integral part of consumer behavior. Apple Pay, for instance, is now accepted at 85% of retailers across the US, including most larger stores.
Walmart's decision to adopt these payment options may seem like a late move, but it reflects a broader shift in the retail landscape. Checkout is no longer seen as a proprietary space where retailers can dictate terms - rather, it has become an interface that customers expect to be able to interact with seamlessly.
