Walmart is finally embracing mainstream mobile wallets by adding Apple Pay and Google Pay to its stores. The retailer had previously resisted NFC-based payments for over a decade, instead requiring customers to download its app and use Walmart Pay.

The rollout of tap-to-pay options will begin on August 24 at select locations in Arkansas, with plans to expand nationwide by the end of 2026. By mid-2027, Walmart aims to have tap-to-pay support at fuel pumps as well.

Walmart Pay is not being discontinued and will remain an option alongside the new contactless payment methods. This allows customers more flexibility in their payment choices.
