Walmart Finally Joins Mobile Payment Revolution
Walmart has finally decided to support Apple Pay and Google Pay at its stores and fuel stations, ending a long-standing holdout in the retail world.
The company will begin rolling out the tap-to-pay option at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations, with plans to reach every store by the end of the year. Fuel stations are expected to be upgraded around mid-2027.
This move is a concession for Walmart, which had spent years pushing its own payment tools, including Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go, as a way to keep shoppers within its own system. However, customers kept asking for tap-to-pay options, with Apple Pay now accepted at 85% of U.S. retailers.
The change is seen as long overdue by many shoppers, who can already tap to pay at Target and Costco among other major chains. The rollout is not instant, but the direction is clear: Walmart is finally joining the club.
