Walmart Slumps on Earnings, But Wall Street Sees Buying Opportunity
Walmart shares plummeted by over 9% following its quarterly earnings release, marking the company's worst one-day decline in four years. The sell-off was triggered by a noticeable deceleration in U.S. same-store sales, which grew by just 2.6% for the quarter ending in July.
Analysts attributed the sluggish growth to federal regulations under the Biden administration that lowered drug prices, along with persistent pressure from elevated fuel costs and cautious consumer sentiment.
Despite the market's negative reaction, Wall Street's broader consensus remains overwhelmingly positive. Out of 41 analysts covering Walmart, 34 maintain a 'Buy' or 'Strong Buy' rating.
JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers advised clients to view the sharp market sell-off as a prime buying opportunity, asserting that the heavy selling pressure has run its course.
