Walmart Stock Soars Ahead of Earnings Report Amid Retail Sales Decline
Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) shares are on an upward trend as investors prepare for the retail company's second-quarter earnings report, scheduled to be released this Thursday before the opening bell.
Earnings estimates from analysts model 74 cents in earnings per share and $186.82 billion in revenue. This is compared to the same period last year when Walmart recorded 68 cents per share on $177.40 billion in revenue.
The retail sales environment has seen a decline, with July U.S. retail sales falling 0.6% monthly to $763.6 billion. This missed expectations for a 0.1% increase, marking the largest monthly drop since May 2025. Nonstore retailer sales, which include Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), fell by 2.2%.
The movement in Walmart's stock price has investors watching key levels such as its 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) of $112.24 and its 50-day SMA of $114.42. While the near-term trend remains constructive, the bigger picture for Walmart's stock remains mixed due to its distance from its 100-day SMA ($120.22) and 200-day SMA ($118.38). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently in neutral territory at 53.79.
