Walmart Taps into Google Pay for In-Store Contactless Payments
After years of resisting NFC payments, Walmart is finally supporting in-store tap to pay with Google Pay. The move marks a significant shift for the retailer, which had previously required customers to use its own QR code-based payment system within the Walmart app.
The rollout of Google Pay support will begin on August 24 at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations across the US. By the end of 2026, all US stores and clubs are expected to be equipped with tap-to-pay functionality, while fuel stations will come online in mid-2027.
Walmart cited customer convenience as a key factor behind its decision to adopt Google Pay. 'Tap to Pay gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods,' the company stated.
