Walmart Taps into Mobile Payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay Support

Walmart is finally embracing tap-to-pay technology by adding support for Apple Pay and Google Pay to its stores. The retail giant announced on Friday that it will bring this capability to 'select' locations starting August 24th, with a plan to roll out the feature to all US stores by the end of 2026 and gas stations by mid-2027.

This marks a significant change for Walmart, which had previously resisted supporting NFC-based payments. In fact, the company even backed the launch of the short-lived CurrentC mobile payment service before rolling out its own Walmart Pay in 2016.

However, it seems that Walmart has changed its tune and is now recognizing the value of offering customers choice in how they pay for their items. The company's announcement emphasizes this point, stating that 'We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them.'
