Walmart Unveils Tap-to-Pay at US Stores Amid Stock Price Pressure
Walmart has finally rolled out tap-to-pay technology across its US stores, marking a significant shift in the retail giant's checkout strategy. The rollout began on August 24 at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations and is expected to reach all US stores by the end of 2026.
The new payment system allows customers to pay using eligible contactless cards, smartphones, and smartwatches, including services like Apple Pay and Google Pay. This change comes after years of resistance from Walmart to mainstream contactless payment options, with the company previously favoring its QR-based Walmart Pay system.
The tap-to-pay technology is also connected to Walmart's growing ambitions in financial services. Eligible Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards can be added to digital wallets, while OnePay offers rewards, debit, credit, and buy-now-pay-later services tied closely to the Walmart ecosystem.
