Walmart's Dividend Streak Faces Test Amid Earnings Report
Walmart's (WMT) impressive 53-year streak of consecutive dividend increases continues to attract long-term investors, despite the retail giant's stock losing momentum in 2026. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer reported a 7.3% year-over-year sales increase for its fiscal 2027 first quarter, which ended April 30.
Chief Financial Officer John Rainey noted that high-income consumers continued spending at normal levels during the quarter, while Walmart's e-commerce platform and new upscale private-label brands helped reel in this demographic. The company's global e-commerce sales jumped 26%, with U.S. transaction growth reaching its highest level in six quarters.
Rainey attributed some of the growth to Walmart's successful push to capture more affluent shoppers, a strategic expansion beyond its core mass-market customer base. However, he also cautioned that persistently elevated oil prices could create further pressure in subsequent quarters.
