Walmart's Sales Growth Falters, Raising Concerns About US Consumer Demand
Walmart's (WMT) second-quarter sales growth fell short of expectations, sparking concerns about U.S. consumer demand. The retail giant's comparable sales in the United States rose by only 2.6% in the quarter, the slowest pace in over six years. Despite this, Walmart's total revenue beat market forecasts, increasing 5.9% to $187.94 billion.
The company's net income declined 9.4% to $6.37 billion, but adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.81, exceeding the expected $0.74. Vladimir Chernov, a Freedom analyst, attributes the slowdown in sales growth to pressure on U.S. consumers' budgets.
In contrast to concerns about retail sales, Walmart's digital business is performing well. The company reported significant growth in online sales, advertising revenue, and subscription income through its Walmart+ service. This expansion into high-margin segments may help offset the costs associated with logistics, fuel, healthcare, and digital infrastructure.
