Warren Targets Healthcare Giants with Bill to Break Up Vertical Integration
Senator Elizabeth Warren has introduced legislation aimed at breaking up the vertical integration in the US healthcare system. The Patients Before Monopolies Act, co-sponsored by Senator Josh Hawley, would ban common ownership of insurers and pharmacies, forcing companies to divest such holdings within a year.
The bill's primary goal is to boost competition and lower drug prices for patients. Warren argues that vertical integration leads to higher costs for patients and increased profits for large corporations. She has criticized UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health, and Cigna for their role in this consolidation, citing the recent second-quarter results of UnitedHealth Group as evidence.
The Patients Before Monopolies Act is a bipartisan effort to address these issues. Warren urges CEOs to use AI tools to review healthcare contracts and uncover potential issues, such as those related to vertical integration.
