Waste Management Taps Automation Tech with Caterpillar Partnership
Waste Management (WM) has announced the successful pilot of remote-controlled landfill equipment at its Marana, Arizona site in early August 2026. The company is partnering with Caterpillar to test autonomous landfill compactors, aiming to boost safety, efficiency and operational visibility.
This adoption of Cat Command technology positions Waste Management as an early mover in automating landfill operations, potentially reshaping the bull case for WM.
The move into remotely controlled and autonomous landfill equipment is directionally positive but does not materially change the near-term focus on integrating Stericycle and managing leverage. The company's recent reduction in 2026 revenue guidance to US$26.275 billion to US$26.475 billion, driven by lower volume expectations partly offset by higher energy surcharges, suggests that investors may weigh the potential longer-term efficiency lever alongside WM's acquisition program and ongoing share repurchases.
