WeatherNext 3: Google's AI-Powered Weather Model Goes Live with Enhanced Forecasts

Google's AI-powered weather model, WeatherNext 3, has been released by Google DeepMind. The updated model offers more detailed forecasts across various variables such as temperature, moisture, and wind speed. One of the key advantages of WeatherNext 3 is its ability to incorporate live satellite data, providing a rich and continuously updating view of the atmosphere.

The new model can offer hourly and higher-resolution forecasts in a 5-kilometer square grid, compared to the previous 25-kilometer square grid. This allows for more precise predictions of wind energy output, high-resolution cloud cover, and sun radiation levels. WeatherNext 3 also combines precipitation data from NASA and Google's satellite analysis, resulting in up to 50 percent more accurate precipitation forecasts.

Google DeepMind notes that the model will be particularly useful for companies involved in renewable energy production, such as wind farms and solar panels. The company has made the original WeatherNext model open-source since August 2026, allowing developers to experiment with the technology and build new applications. WeatherNext 3 will power weather experiences in Google Search, Gemini app, and Google Maps, among other platforms.
