Wendy's Shares Soar on Short Squeeze Fears Amid Rising Short Interest

Wendy's stock has surged 4% to $8.14 after Thursday's 13% decline, leaving investors wondering if a short squeeze is brewing in the burger trade.

The sudden rebound comes as short interest in Wendy's sits at 30.8%, one of its highest readings on record and steadily rising since early 2024.

This has raised concerns that holders of short positions may be forced to cover their bets, leading to a potential squeeze.

Thursday's decline was largely attributed to a Reuters report citing sources familiar with the matter stating that Trian Fund Management had no plans to bid for Wendy's at present, unwinding a takeover premium built after an August 12 report of a potential take-private bid by Nelson Peltz-led group alongside BlueFive Capital and Flynn Group.

Meanwhile, McDonald's stock has ticked up 2% to $264.03, while the Invesco Food & Beverage ETF is up 0.6% to $48.09, but Wendy's bounce remains a single-name rebound outrunning both.
