Western Union Introduces Stablecoin-Based Solution for Global Transactions
Western Union has launched a new stablecoin-based solution in collaboration with Rain, allowing users to hold dollar value and spend it at any Visa merchant or ATM. The solution, called Stablecard, combines a digital USDPT wallet and a Visa card in one experience, enabling users to receive funds and store value in the U.S. dollar stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital on the Solana blockchain.
Stablecard is available in 37 markets initially, including areas where local currencies are unstable, and Western Union plans to offer it in over 60 markets by the end of the year. The mobile app for Stablecard is available on both Apple App Store and Google Play. Devin McGranahan, President and CEO of Western Union, said that Stablecard makes global financial services more accessible.
Farooq Malik, CEO and Co-Founder of Rain, stated that Western Union's Stablecard brings stablecoin efficiency to people who have never considered on-chain money. Rain has infrastructure underneath both the wallet and card, providing users with a modern experience with built-in compliance and protections. Western Union has been sharpening its focus on digital and artificial intelligence.
