WestJet Grounds Boeing Fleets Amid Labour Dispute
WestJet has grounded its Boeing 737 and 787 fleets due to an ongoing labour dispute between the airline and its cabin crew union. The stoppage, which was expected after a 72-hour strike notice was issued by the union, has forced cancellations and rebookings across WestJet's mainline network.
The union represents around 4,400 cabin crew members who are seeking better pay and working conditions. WestJet had offered a proposal that it claims is industry-leading and sustainable, but it was rejected by the union.
The airline has warned passengers scheduled to fly over the last two days of July and through August 4 that they can change or cancel their bookings without penalty. However, there is no confirmed timeline for when the stoppage will conclude, with WestJet stating that negotiations are ongoing.
