Westmeath Star Anna Jones Tees Off with Rugby and Boxing Legends
Westmeath's Anna Jones is one of the few female athletes competing in the Amgen Irish Open Pro-Am at Doonbeg, Clare. The event, which starts today and runs until Sunday, features a stellar sporting line-up including former Ireland scrum-half Conor Murray, Limerick hurler Gearóid Hegarty, and retired boxer Michael Conlan.
Anna, a senior Westmeath footballer, was contacted by the Irish Open after the GPA (Gaelic Players Association) looked for players to enter. She is playing alongside Ryan O'Donoghue (Mayo footballer) and Cliona O'Callaghan (Cork camogie). The pro is Michael Hollick.
The event is a one-day Pro-Am, a curtain raiser to the main feature of the Amgen Irish Open. Anna expressed her gratitude for being part of this opportunity: 'I'm at the first tee box on the 18th green... It's incredible. I'm very lucky to be a part of this.'
