The hump originated from a specific set of priorities when the 747 was launched in the 1960s. It allowed for freight flexibility, nose loading, and optimized economics for large four-engine aircraft. Modern jets are built with different priorities, such as fuel burn, operating cost, range flexibility, and clean-sheet efficiency.
The hump was never just a design choice; it was an engineering compromise born from the need to serve as both a passenger jet and a freighter. Boeing carried over concepts from the CX-HLS project, which aimed for a military transport with a 180,000-pound load capacity and 5,000-nautical-mile range. The nose door and raised cockpit were designed for easy cargo loading and unloading.
Over time, Boeing transformed this engineering compromise into something airlines could sell by turning the upper deck space into usable cabin real estate. This became a valuable feature, especially in premium seating areas.
