Wichita's Irma Schutt Celebrates 100 Years of Work and Dancing
Irma Schutt, a Wichita native and former Boeing riveter, celebrated her 100th birthday on September 4, 2026. At 5 years old, she started square dancing in barns with families from the community every Friday night.
The tradition continued for decades, and she still attends square dances today, often driving by herself to support the activity.
As a riveter at Boeing, Schutt worked on a bench building parts before becoming a lead over 230 employees. She was one of the first women in her position and didn't let her gender intimidate her - 'I was raised on a farm, so I was used to doing all kinds of work,' she said.
When asked about turning 100, Schutt responded with a philosophy that has guided her throughout her life: 'You shouldn't slow down. You should be active and keep going.'
