Windows 11 Gets Major Taskbar and Start Menu Overhaul
Microsoft has released the Windows 11 KB5120998 update, which brings significant changes to the taskbar and Start menu. The optional preview update moves version 25H2 to Build 26200.9278 and 24H2 to Build 26100.9278.
The update allows users to place the taskbar at any of the four corners of their screen, giving them more flexibility in customizing their layout. A smaller taskbar option is also available.
The Start menu has been made resizable, with options for small, large, or automatic sizing. Users can now turn off sections like Pinned, Recent, or All Apps, and even hide their profile details.
Search functionality has been improved, allowing users to disable Bing and Microsoft Store results, showing only local files and apps. Performance also gets a boost with faster system tray loading, quicker File Explorer's Home tab opening, smoother scrolling, and better icon and menu responsiveness.
